Eumofa Monthly Highlights 11 – 2020 is online
This month’s issue analyses first sales of European pilchard (Netherlands, Portugal, Spain) and European sprat (Poland, Netherlands, Sweden). The case studies of this month are “Fisheries and aquaculture in Brazil” and “Megrim in the EU”.
The headline messages from this month’s market insights are listed below.
FIRST SALES IN EUROPE: Poland registered the greatest decrease in first-sales volume and value among the surveyed countries between January and September 2020. This was mainly due to a lower supply of highly valued cod, while volume fell primarily due to lower catches of sprat and herring. In September 2020, first sales decreased the most in the Netherlands. First-sales volume decreased by 59% and value by 40%. This decline was mainly due to lower sales of herring. FIRST SALES OF EUROPEAN PILCHARD AND EUROPEAN SPRAT: First-sales prices of European pilchard experienced an upward trend in the Netherlands and Spain between October 2017 and September 2020, while in Portugal they followed a decreasing trend. The Netherlands registered the highest average first-sales price of the species, at 1,99 EUR/kg.Over the same period, prices of European sprat increased in the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden. The average first-sales price was the lowest in Poland, at 0,17 EUR/kg. In Sweden, it was 24% higher, while in the Netherlands it was 86% higher.
EXTRA-EU IMPORTS: The price of frozen mackerel imported into the EU from the Faroe Islands increased in 2020 (up to October), while volume decreased slightly. Price ranged from 1,00 to 2,00 EUR/kg.
CONSUMPTION: In 2019, Portuguese consumers spent an average of 7,89 EUR per kilogram of scabbardfish. A total of 2.273 tonnes of this fish species was consumed in the country in the same year.
FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE IN BRAZIL: The EU exported 16.329 tonnes of fisheries and aquaculture products to Brazil in 2019. The main exported species was cod, which covered 42% of total volume of exports.
MEGRIM IN THE EU: Global production of megrim amounted to 18.329 tonnes in 2018, almost exclusively caught by the EU fleet (98% of world catch volume). The leading producers were France (28%), the UK (27%), Spain (23%), and Ireland (16%).
GLOBAL HIGHLIGHTS: In November 2020, the European Union, the Faroe Islands, Norway, Iceland, Greenland, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom reached an agreement on the 2021 management measures for blue whiting and Atlanto-Scandian herring in the North East Atlantic.
MACROECONOMIC CONTEXT: In November 2020, average prices for marine fuel in France, Italy, Spain, and the UK increased by about 3% relative to the previous month, reaching an average of 0,31 EUR/litre. Compared with November 2019, fuel prices were 36% higher.
