EUMOFA Monthly Highlights No. 2/2022 is online

This month’s issue analyses first sales of great Atlantic scallop (Netherlands, France, Belgium) and Japanese carpet shell (Spain, Portugal, Italy). The case studies of this month are: “Fisheries and Aquaculture in Tunisia”; “Species profile: swordfish”.

FIRST SALES IN EUROPE. In November 2021, compared to November 2020, first-sales value and volume of fisheries and aquaculture products increased in Cyprus, France, Latvia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Norway, and the United Kingdom. FIRST SALES OF GREAT ATLANTIC SCALLOP AND JAPANESE CARPET SHELL. From December 2018 to November 2021, the weighted average first-sales price of great Atlantic scallop in the Netherlands was 2,83 EUR/kg, which was 7% higher than that in France (2,64 EUR/kg) and 55% greater than that in Belgium (1,82 EUR/kg). Read more. In the same period, the weighted average first-sales price of Japanese carpet shell in Spain was 9,92 EUR/kg. This was five-fold higher than in Portugal (1,66 EUR/kg), and 39% greater than in Italy (7,12 EUR/kg). Read more.

EXTRA-EU IMPORTS. Since the beginning of 2022, both the price and volume of prepared or preserved mackerel fillets from Morocco have demonstrated an upward trend. Read more.

FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE IN TUNISIA. During the last five years (2017-2021), trade between the EU and Tunisia has been characterised by an overall increase in EU exports value by 21%, and an overall decrease in EU imports value by -15%. Read more.

SPECIES PROFILE: SWORDFISH. In 2021, the EU imported 114 million of tonnes swordfish at a value of nearly EUR 18 million. The majority of swordfish imports (in volume terms) were mainly in frozen form from Ecuador, China, and Indonesia. Read more.

GLOBAL HIGHLIGHTS. The European Commission has adopted a set of conservation measures to protect six areas defined under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and five Natura 2000 sites, in the Danish and Swedish parts of the Kattegat. Read more.

MACROECONOMIC CONTEXT. Average prices for marine fuel in February 2022 ranged between 0,68 and 0,75EUR/litre in ports in France, Italy, Spain, and the UK. Prices increased by an average of 10% compared with the previous month and 71% compared with the same month in 2021. Read more.
