EUMOFA Monthly Highlights 6 – 2020 is online

This month’s issue analyses first sales of Greenland halibut (Spain, Denmark and France) and turbot (France, Belgium and Netherlands). The case studies of this month provide the very first EUMOFA analysis of fisheries and aquaculture trade trends in 2019 (“Trade in the EU in 2019”) and cod in the EU.

The headline messages from this month's market insights are listed below.

FIRST SALES IN EUROPE: In March 2020, Belgium saw an increase in fisheries first-sales value and volume relative to the same month in 2019. This was mainly due to an increase in the supply of common sole and cuttlefish. Over the same period, France and Italy saw decreases in first-sales value and volume, primarily due to reduced supplies of scallop and sardine. Access the most recent weekly (up to week 24 of 2020) and monthly (April 2020) data for first sales in Europe on the EUMOFA website. The data underlying the First Sales analyses in the Monthly Highlights is available in the annex here.

FIRST SALES OF GREENLAND HALIBUT AND TURBOT: In Spain, the average first-sales price of Greenland halibut was 5,15 EUR/kg between April 2017 and March 2020. This was 24% higher than the average price in Denmark and 10% higher than that in France. The average first-sales price of turbot was 17,85 EUR/kg in France, 56% higher than in Belgium, and 66% greater than in the Netherlands.

EXTRA-EU IMPORTS: The price of fresh or chilled turbot from Norway was 6,90 EUR/kg in the last week of April 2020. This was 32% lower than the same time last year (10,11 EUR/kg).

CONSUMPTION: Over the past three years, Italy’s household consumption of fresh clams has remained more than five times higher than that of Portugal. Access the most recent weekly (up to week 24 of 2020) consumption data on the EUMOFA website.

TRADE IN THE EU IN 2019: The first EUMOFA analyses of fisheries and aquaculture trade trends in 2019 revealed that EU imports from third countries remained stable in terms of volume relative to 2018, and saw a 2,5% increase in value, reaching a total of 6,3 million tonnes with a value of EUR 27,2 billion.

COD IN THE EU: In 2018, cod landed in the EU reached 68.000 tonnes, worth EUR 216 million. This represents 2% of the total value of EU landings. Landings were mostly made by the largest quota holders, Denmark and the UK , as well as Germany, Poland and France.

GLOBAL HIGHLIGHTS: On 22 April the European Union, Norway, and the Faroe Islands reached a coastal states agreement for the monitoring, control and surveillance (MSC) of shared pelagic stocks in the Northeast Atlantic (mackerel, horse mackerel, blue whiting, and herring).

MACROECONOMIC CONTEXT: In May 2020, average prices for marine fuel in France, Italy, Spain, and the UK decreased by 1% relative to the previous month, falling to an average price of 0,27 EUR/litre. Although this decrease was less than that of previous months, fuel prices were still 49% lower than recorded in May 2019.

The study is available in English, French and Spanish.
